SOHO WALK

First developed as an aristocratic suburb for the wealthy after the Great Fire of London destroyed their homes in the City of London, Soho quickly went downhill. Firstly as the home of a series of impoverished immigrants, secondly as the bolt hole of political radicals, thirdly as an industrial hinterland to the glamorous avenues and boulevards that surround it but always as a nexus for London's sex trade.

• The walk explains the the causes of the changes in Soho's fortunes

• It tells the story of some of its inhabitants and habitués; from Karl Marx the German communist to Oscar Wilde the 'posing somdomite'

• It looks at the re-branding of Soho as the fashionable night time destination for adventurous Londoners in the early twentieth century.

• It looks at how various communities; French, Italian and Jewish made Soho their home.

• It explains how this corner of London became the centre for London's sex trade in the 1960s and 70s
